For Flick

Resonance [work in progress]

Defn : a sympathetic effect beyond its immediate meaning

Education and its power to liberate and transform.
Theatre trips chased by wine fuelled wisdom,
Rocking beats triggering links to more youthful lives,
Cohen magic and humility on a driech summer evening.
Collective efforts in joyful ageing celebrations and
Helping friends dealing with all those trials of life.
Experiences expanded through global tales and new
Friends now connected in Flicks extended family.
Unlikely threads becoming visible and stronger.
Resolute in thankful happy common purpose.

John McCann, August 2010

Sleeping in the Forest

I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

from Sleeping In The Forest by Mary Oliver,
New and Selected Poems Volume 1, Twelve Moons 1979

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.

  1. Hi, I just wanted to share these words from a book I was given when I was fifteen. It is an old friend and I go back to it time and again.

From The Prophet by Kahili Gibran

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Sing and dance, Flick, now to your heart’s content.
    Love you all, Biddy

  3. To Henry, Thomas & Jamie
I heard about Flick whilst we were on Iona, the first thing the kids did, when told, was ask to go and light a candle for her and you at the Abbey. Candles were lit and prayers said for an amazing woman and those left behind.

    See you Saturday

    Love to you all xxx

  6. As the rain hides the stars, as the Autumn mist hides the hills, As the clouds veil the Blue of the sky, so the dark happenings of my lot,
hide the shining of thy face, From me,
Yet if I may Hold thy hand in the darkness, it is enough,
since I know that though I may stumble in my going,
Thou did not fall. Much, Love to you all Ruth.
